Your discussion with Jordan B Peterson was an absolute pleasure! He is the most articulate person I have ever come across that speaks about the most profound aspects of Human Being. His book, Maps of Meaning, is dense and deep. His lectures (speaking truth) can for some, be life changing. Your discussion reminds me of the first time I saw “The Necessity of Virtue” lecture. The spiralling upward as your discussion reached the end was awesome on “multiple levels of analysis”.
I highly recommend further exploration of his work for those seeking the tools to understand their own meaning of their existence.
Civil discourse is what will stem the tide of ideological possession and your podcast can be a way, large or small, to bring about the Good.

Dammit – Excited almost beyond belief. To hear this wind up as it did. It is like hearing a song that moves you on the radio…knowing others FEEL what you are feeling.
And it is because of EXACTLY what you all were hammering at the end. One foot in order (your background knowledge) and one in chaos (getting new information).
Too much new information with no framework is too much chaos.
Having the framework understanding allows you to FEEL the structure growing, and that is when you are in that place. When you are DOING something meaningful.
You are REALIZING (making what you know become REAL.)
Logic and rationality are NOT abstract, but very real, and the emotions attached to them through EXPERIENCE (including millions of years of biological evolution) let us know emotionally what is TRUE. No anger in that moment, no time in that moment, no fear in that moment…it is joy. I am technically an atheist, but THAT is a spiritual moment. Of course we can be mistaken, and fooled into any sort of emotional state, even of joy, but that IS an evolutionarily sound state to be in. Even if it defies some “good” logic.. even when it might not SEEM rational .. maybe it is as rational as we get.
I’d thought of it more easily in terms of physical action, improving skills (on the edge of the biggest wave ..on the edge of balance..at the limits of skill..that is where you are learning something. When what you are learning is about that process itself, it’s as deep as meaning gets for the rational abilities of the mind. We can never be without the emotional, and that is as it should be, but what can be better than to feel so motivated by what seems so logical and rational by our best of consensus (science).
It seems strange, but Peterson has brought the science of psychology, and that science is not easy. It can only be tested via experience of society. We can have our anecdotal joys, but how can we know? Well, it is a strange thing for this atheist to have such a deep faith in the process. As Peterson is doing now .. speaking the truth as best we know it, and watching what happens. This method is a hero’s journey, and he is living what he preaches. It really can change the world … change our reality.
What we get in facing these dragons is great..what we learn BY facing them is even greater. Validation of the process.
It is why so many of his student have their lives changed, and i have been changed too. I have never been a formal student of his, but since 2004 have taken in everything I can of his. Only now I am a realizing so much of it in my personal life.
I have always believed it, agreed with it… Now it is becoming real as i act on it, and i also realize the vital aspect. Talking is acting, and when we talk honestly and deeply, things happen..things change….

This man is a modern day prodigy. To be able to identify and articulate this huge problem in the western world today is nothing short of genius. Thanks Bryan Callen for providing a platform for alternative ideas.

    Excellent discussion.

The ideas being looked at really are crucial and lacking in our modern world.
Dr Peterson really articulates his position and understanding of often misunderstood or misinterpreted mythological and religious systems so clearly and with such completeness it’s difficult to counter.
Some of these areas are also discussed at great length by Dr Stephen Hoeller. He is an expert on Jung, religion and mythology and a practicing Gnostic Christian, and speaks with the same authority of truth which Dr Peterson eminates.
Keep up the good work and Thanks

Great podcast, agree with virtually everything Jordan was talking about however I take exception to his idea that the lunacy that is hitting society is due to a lack of belief in a religious deity.

Given that the U.S. is vastly a majority of Christians or Catholics, how can he square that circle?

Given that nearly 50% of American’s outright reject evolution in favour of some form of creationism, how does he square that circle?

Perhaps it’s just we live such soft lives, that we aren’t challenged in life in terms of survival (it’s never been easy for the weakest in society to survive than now) that people just have to invent controversy to fight with one another to fill the void of having to survive.

I know this next part is anecdotal, but nobody I know or hang out with is a devoted religious person.

All of us agree that these SJW’s are out of their fucking mind and political correctness as it is today is swinging too far to the left and getting out of control.

I think what is happening is you have a fringe group of society ( on the left or right) that just have a desire to control people and everything else is just white noise trying to make sense of this and not being able to because we are not authoritarians.

Free speech should always win out. I’m Canadian and I’m ashamed of my government bowing down to political correctness. We have to teach our youth better to be able to entertain ideas that run contrary to their operating software. We have to teach them that ideas are just that and that the best ideas should win out.

That’s how I’m going to raise my son…

Yep! We need to do a better job of moving these ideas! There’s no shortage of lunacy going on!
